Is The Cliq XT Worth Rooting?
Once rooting was possible for this phone it took some time before any roms were available, but now there is. A modder known as ADLX (http://twitter.com/#!/adumont) released a rom with version 2.1 of the OS, and now there is a rom with 2.3 out.
Bottom line, I would not run out and get this phone just to root it and put a new rom on it, but I think that if you have one it is well worth it to root it and get a more recent OS running on it!

Rooted CliqXT
I have now rooted my CliqXT. It is pretty much the same method as rooting the Droid 2:
Run the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin, restart the shell, and bingo.
Life is good.

Rooting the Motorola Cliq XT
Still not update for the Motorola CliqXT, soooo.....
I still haven't been able to make much progress in rooting this thing. I tried the method that works for one version of the phone - the Quench. The phone is packaged as the Cliq XT on T-Mobile here in the US, but in Brazil it's called the Quench.
This is the program to root it: http://www.taranfx.com/download/instant-root.zip
The only problem is it only works on two know versions of the firmware (and one rumored version):
- Blur_Version.0.12.196.MB501.TIM.en.BR # WORKS
- Blur_Version.0.12.183.MB501.TIM.en.BR # Dont Work
The current state of rooting is with modifying a recovery tool. This probably means the method will be to downgrade the firmware, run the exploit, and then install a modified firmware after the exploit. It feels like we're getting close, but scraping at the edge of nothing sometimes.
Reading this forum makes it feel pretty promising: modmymobile.com.

Motorola Cliq XT
I have spent days trying to find a way to root this phone. Some times I think I am so close, and other days it seems like it will never happen. My latest attempts have been to find scripts and executables that the system is likely to execute as the privileged user and insert a call to telnetd or fire off a shell somewhere.
The thing that makes me want it even more is the delay in the update to the firmware that was expected by the end of June. Android 2.1, according to Motorola's previous projections, was supposed to hit the Cliq and the Cliq XT in Q2 (April, May, or June). They announced that it wasn't going to happen -- I think on June 30. I could really care less about all of the features of 2.1, but I do care that it is at least 1.6. There are a number of applications that I would like to use that require >=1.6.
Having root would just be bonus. I'd like to use WiFi tethering and make a few minor adjustments. Seems like you own the box you should be able to do what you want on it, right?

DG: Sue me, because you told your customer the domain I own is where your email came from?

QUIT YOUR CRYING
People in San Antonio are all up in arms because some of the local public schools are probably going to get closed. I thought it was stupid, but finally realized why they are so bothered. My thought is this: people are most connected to their most recently attended academic institution. In some places people have the logo, or initials of their alma mater, well here, it seems, the tradition is a little different. Many people have the name of their high school on the back of their cars.
There are months (read several) that go by that I don't think of any of the high schools I attended. I'm annoyed by these people.
